STAR TREK ORNAMENTS

The Star Trek television series debuted on September 8, 1966.  The show tells the tale of the crew of the Starship Enterprise.  Their five year mission "To go where no man has gone before".   The Starship Enterprise joined the Hallmark Keepsake ornament line in 1991.  Paramount Pictures approached Hallmark to create an ornament of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 to commemorate the series' 25th anniversary.

Hallmark had never made an ornament of a popular cultural icon before.  There was some controversy on how the first ornament should be made.  Some felt that is should maintain the "Christmas appeal" and have a bust of Santa popping out of the Enterprise bridge with green garland around the saucer's edge.  Lynn Norton, the designer of the first Starship Enterprise ornament and long time Star Trek fan disagreed.  He wanted to make the ornament as authentic as possible, appealing to both Star trek and Hallmark collectors.  Finally, a compromise was reached.  The Enterprise went into production with the regulation Starfleet design with festive red and green flashing lights.

Other ornaments of the original Star Trek crew soon followed.  From the original series came ornaments of Captain James T. Kirk (1995), Mr. Spock (1996) and Dr. McCoy (1997).

In 2004, Hallmark artist Anita Marra Rogers designed the Magic ornament called  "The Guardian of Forever".  This was from the original series and shows Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock leaping through a portal from their time into the 1930s.  As lights on the ornament flicker, The Guardian speaks three excerpts from the episode.

She also designed another Magic ornament called The Transporter Chamber.  This ornament shows Mr. Scott, Captain Kirk, and Mr. Spock beaming off the Enterprise.

Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted on television in 1987.  This crew was led by Captain Jean Luk Picard and featured a new starship called Enterprise-D.  Hallmark Keepsake ornaments were designed for the memorable characters on the show.  Some of these include Captain Jean Luk Picard (1995), Commander William T. Riker (1996), and Commander Data (1997).  Some of the starships include: Klingon Bird of Prey (1994), Romulan Warbird (1995) and of course, the USS Enterprise (1993).

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine debuted in 1993.  This crew was let by Captain Benjamin Sisco.  It was set in the same Star Date time frame as the Next Generation.  Hallmark Keepsake ornament artists designed several ornaments from this popular television series.  Some of the characters include Worf (1999) and Captain Benjamin Sisco (2001).  Hallmark Keepsake starship ornaments from this series include: U.S.S. Defiant (1997), Runabout USS Rio Grande (1999) and Deep Space Nine Station (2001).
Star Trek: Voyager is the only series to feature a woman as commanding officer.  Captain Kathryn Janeway leads the crew of the Starship USS Voyager.  Hallmark Keepsake ornaments from this series include: Captain Janeway (1998), The Doctor (2002), and Seven of Nine (2000).  Starships from this series include:  USS Voyager (1996),  Borg Cube  (2000), and Delta Flyer (2002).

Finally, the most recent Star Trek series, Star Trek: Enterprise, debuted in 2001.  This series was a prequel to the other Star Trek shows.  It took place over 100 years before the original series.  The very first Starship Enterprise was commanded by Captain  Jonathan Archer.  Hallmark Keepsake ornament artist did not leave this series out.  Captain Jonathon Archer (2003),  Commander Trip Tucker (2004), and Sub Commander T'Pol (2003) make their way into Hallmark history.  The Starship Enterprise NX-01 (2002)  was designed by Hallmark Keepsake artists from this series.
